University of East London Review

(5)·By Muhammad A·Film· Jun 2025
The University of East London (UEL) is an exciting place to study, with a strong focus on career development and diversity. However, like any university, it has its strengths and weaknesses.

Student Life

UEL has a vibrant student community, with plenty of clubs and societies catering to different interests. The student union organizes events throughout the year, creating a lively social scene. However, some students feel that campus life could be more engaging, especially compared to central London universities.

Your Course

UEL offers a range of courses with a strong practical focus, often incorporating real-world projects and industry connections. Some students praise the hands-on learning approach, while others feel that certain courses could benefit from more academic depth and better organization.

The Commute

The Docklands and Stratford campuses are well connected via the DLR, Underground, and bus services. If you live in London, commuting is fairly easy, but students coming from outside the city might find travel costs expensive. Those living near campus enjoy quick access to classes and central London.

Accommodation

UEL’s on-campus accommodation at Docklands provides stunning waterfront views and is one of the few London universities offering a campus-style living experience. The rooms are decent, but some students mention that prices can be high for what you get. Many students opt for private rentals in Stratford, which can sometimes be more affordable but vary in quality.

The Social Scene

UEL’s social life is what you make of it. There are bars, restaurants, and entertainment options nearby, and central London is just a short train ride away. The university itself has social spaces, but some students feel there could be more nightlife and events on campus.

What’s Great?

• Diverse and inclusive student body
• Career-focused courses with industry links
• Good transport links to central London
• Modern facilities, including a scenic Docklands campus

What Could Be Better?

• More student events and nightlife options
• Improved course organization and academic support
• Lower accommodation costs or better value for money

Final Thoughts

UEL is a great choice for students who want a career-driven education in London with a diverse and supportive community. While some areas could be improved, it offers a solid university experience with good industry connections and modern facilities.

University as a first-year student is difficult but not as hard as I thought. It's easy to make friends, and they have great course plans, mixed assessment types, and provide you with new skills in every lecture and seminar. Teachers engage you well in classes, which you'd think wouldn’t happen. It's fun, it's helpful, and overall a great experience.

University is worth pursuing for the life experience, even if not solely for the degree.

Freshers week was really exciting! There were lots of events planned and social mixers. Every day was full of activities. Loved every minute of it! The accommodation is second to none. Lovely views across the dock lands and access to lots of facilities. Just a tube ride away from central London too. Good sized rooms and lots of space The libraries are very resourceful. The staff helpful, books and electronic articles available at the push of a button. Study rooms are made available for students as well as silent studies areas! Lectures halls and classrooms are good sizes and well equipped as are the labs and sports facilities too The course is an eye opener to how the world around us thinks. Every individual is different and to be able to open doors and careers that will allow us to make a difference and understand one another on a personal as well as educational level City life was booming. London is the capital so there's always something happening. Different events every weekend and the perfect spots for coffee, dinner or a good party night out. London has it all. The job market is fierce and forever moving so it keeps you on your toes and busy. It's never boring!

It was eventful. Lots of partying, nights out and not so many nights in. I met lots of cool people from different societies and clubs It was very good. Private en-suites, all heated and lit well. Kitchen was communal with 2 ovens/stoves and 4 fridge/freezers. Excellent again. All first class, clean, spacious. Football, indoor basketball and 2 gyms were excellent on campus. Student Union was small but many nights weren't spent there. The course taught me the fundamentals of biomedicine. I learnt the core values of science and it helped with my application for further career applications and studies. London was unbelievable. It wasn't a place where you could hide, so many mates were made. Busy hustle and bustle

It was fun, I got to meet new people and join in the different activities that were happening and I really enjoyed the environment I like the accommodation beverage they were very modern and spacious and the view is beautiful so I would definitely recommend The facilities are excellent because there's everything, the gym is nice and spacious, 2 out of 3 have the biggest library so you'll be able to do your work regardless and the classroom and lecture halls are huge The courses are interesting to learn and the lectures ensure that everyone understands the teachings properly as well as giving out resources and useful information for the students I commute so I wouldn't know, but Stratford is very lively and so many people of different backgrounds are there so you can always find meet new people

Education / Teacher Training, Graduate

It was very refreshing and made me feel more excited about studying university and becoming more independent Did not stay as I was able to commute The library was very much where I spent most of my time studying. Classrooms were very professionally designed suiting the needs of students Having the lessons and resources online was a big help as I was able to go back and read into content as much as I needed. I was at the docklands campus 1 day a week (right by the lake!) and it was also very close to shopping areas. Commuting was very straight forward as well
