The university I study at provides opportunities to its students by having professors who are knowledgeable and experienced in their fields. Many have worked professionally before and now teach the future generation of workers, which I am a part of.

The teaching is industry-oriented, with a strong emphasis on coursework, lab skills, and real-world application rather than just theory. The campus is modern, compact, and well equipped, especially for science and health courses. Lecturers are approachable and supportive, and there is good academic guidance if you engage. DMU also offers strong student support services and a diverse student community. De Montfort University offers a practical, career-focused learning environment with supportive lecturers. The campus is compact and centrally located, making commuting easy. Courses emphasize hands-on skills and coursework rather than just theory. Student life is diverse, with social and cultural activities available if you choose to engage.

In the beginning, it's hard to settle down, but the university staff and professors support you with any kind of problem and also help clear your doubts.

I completed my Master’s at De Montfort University in 2022, and I’m returning in 2026 to begin my PhD, which probably says more than anything else I could write. If I didn’t genuinely value my experience, I wouldn’t be coming back.

Student life at DMU is what you make of it. It’s a diverse, friendly environment where you’ll meet people from all over the world. As an international student myself, I never felt out of place. There are plenty of societies, faith groups, networking events, and cultural activities. It’s not overwhelming like some huge city universities, but that actually makes it easier to find your circle and build real friendships.

Leicester is quite student-friendly in terms of size. Getting around is manageable; buses are regular, and many students live within walking distance of campus. Compared to bigger cities, the commute stress is minimal, which honestly helps your productivity and mental wellbeing.

There are several accommodation options, both university-managed and private. Prices are more affordable compared to cities like London or Manchester. Like anywhere, some places are better than others, so I’d advise doing proper research and viewing where possible. Overall, I found Leicester relatively reasonable in terms of cost of living.

Leicester has a lively but balanced social scene. There are restaurants, cafés, cultural events, and nightlife options without it feeling chaotic. It’s multicultural, which means amazing food and community events. If you want constant big-city buzz, you might find it quieter, but personally, I liked that balance. It allowed me to focus academically while still enjoying student life.

What’s great: Supportive lecturers who are accessible, strong academic resources (the library was one of my favourite places), diversity and inclusivity, affordable living compared to many UK cities, and a campus that feels like a community rather than just buildings.

What could be better: Some administrative processes can take time (like most universities), certain facilities could always benefit from upgrades, and you need to be proactive—opportunities are there, but you must seek them out.

Overall, DMU gave me confidence academically and professionally. It pushed me, supported me, and prepared me well enough that I’m returning for my PhD. For intending students: if you want a university that is supportive, diverse, practical, and realistically affordable, De Montfort University is worth serious consideration.
