Animal Conservation, Behaviour and Welfare Bachelor of Science (with Honours) - BSc (Hons)

This course has been developed in collaboration with industry partners to provide you with the knowledge and practical skills required for careers in animal management, conservation, behaviour and welfare. 

You will study the scientific principles underpinning conservation practices and animal behaviour, and explore how these contribute to promoting positive welfare and natural behaviours. The course also examines contemporary ethical issues within the sector, including the motivations and impacts associated with activities such as poaching, trophy hunting and breeding for sport. 

A strong emphasis is placed on the application of theory to practice. You will work with a range of species to develop skills in behaviour monitoring, welfare assessment and animal husbandry. The course also supports the development of professional, graduate and transferable skills to prepare you for employment within the animal industry. 

A key feature of the programme is the partnership with Puxton Park, providing access to a working animal environment with a diverse range of species used for conservation, agricultural and domestic purposes. You will also have the opportunity to work alongside external conservation organisations to gain experience in habitat preservation/restoration, as well as be provided with a range of guest speakers that will support your learning journey. 

 

Careers and opportunities 

Graduates may progress into a variety of roles within the animal and conservation sectors, including:

The course also provides a foundation for postgraduate study in related areas such as conservation biology, zoology or environmental science. 

 Teaching and learning 

You will learn through a combination of lectures, practical sessions, workshops and independent study. The course includes opportunities to apply theory in practical settings, including work with live animals. 

 Assessment 

Assessment methods may include written assignments, practical assessments, presentations, research projects and a final-year dissertation.
