Hispanic Studies (50% of your degree) combines advanced linguistic development with in-depth cultural study. Hispanic Studies (50% of your degree) combines advanced linguistic development with in-depth cultural study. You will take Spanish at beginners or advanced level, working towards becoming proficient, alongside cultural modules each semester, in addition to modules in your partner subject. In year two, all students can study Catalan or Portuguese. In later years, you continue with Spanish language modules and specialist options spanning Iberian and Latin American literature, cinema and culture from medieval to modern periods. A Year Abroad, which may be split between two regions, consolidates fluency and enhances your international career prospects.
The Italian component allows students to develop Italian language skills (whether from beginner or A level standard) to becoming a proficient user, as well as introducing them to a range of aspects of Italian studies from linguistics through historical, cultural and transnational study (including literature and film) to practical, digital and mediation skills such as translation and interpreting. Students taking 50% Italian also have the option of completing a dissertation which builds language and subject-related, research and cognitive skills and offers the chance to conduct original research.
Most Combined Degrees allow you to adapt the weighting of each by 25% after the first year, helping you to keep your options open. Please note, however, students studying either a Business or Economics pathway in combination with another subject cannot increase from 25% to 50% or from 50% to 75% and it is not possible to transfer from a 50% to 75% Law. Extended Project
Applicants who offer the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) and 3 A levels and meet our offer criteria will be made the standard offer, plus an alternative offer. This will be at one A Level grade lower plus a grade B in the EPQ, for example the offer would be ABB or BBB plus B in the EPQ.
International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme
32 points overall with no score less than 4 and including 5 in HL relevant language or pass the IB Diploma plus 6,5,5 in 3 HL subjects including 5 in HL relevant language.
WJEC Level 3 Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales
B in the Welsh Baccalaureate, plus AB at A level to include relevant language. Some Level 3 qualifications are only acceptable alongside 2 or 3 A levels, please contact us for details.
Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016)
